First off, let me be clear that I dont support disturbing these birds. However, this is not the photo I expected to see. I'm surprised that this postural behavioural can be interpreted with certainty as a response to the close approach of observers. It looks more like what hawk owls do when they see become intensely focussed on potential prey items.
