I also don't condone approaching owls too closely. However, I don't interpret the sleeked concealment posture in the photo as caused by humans. This identical posture is perfectly illustrated on page 500 in volume 4 of the "Birds of the Western Palearctic" by Cramp et al. 1985, published by Oxford University Press. It states "When aware of aerial predator or distant ground predator, adopts concealing sleeked-upright posture: flattens plumage, stands erect, and stares at source of alarm." The Northern Hawk Owl is staring at something in the distance, not below. I suspect that it saw a predator, such as a Northern Goshawk, which wasn't seen by the photographer.
