Re(1): Northern Hawk Owl - before & after

I observed a Northern Hawk Owl over many days from mid Dec 1996 to late Feb 1997 along Centerville Creek road s.w. of Bolton. During that time I observed the "plumage compressed tight to body concealment posture" on numerous occasions, never in response to disturbance by humans, always in response to the appearance of raptors [ Northern Goshawk, Cooper's Hawk, Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk, Red-tailed hawk ] as well as American Crows. The degree/intensity of this posture appeared to be determined in general by the distance of the raptor or Crow from the owl, the closer they were the more intense the concealment response. The most intense responses by far I observed were however reserved for Northern Goshawk and Cooper's hawk even before they had flown close. The owl became "pencil thin" as in the second photo, and in moments it had flown off to hide in thick cover nearby, only to fly back to its original open perch after the perceived danger had passed.
