Leilani brings up an amusing question to me because it affects me greatly. Since living on the mainland I've been considered a curiosity particularly here in the mid west. There isn't a week that will go by without my being approached and asked what my nationality is or what tribe do I come from. For years I was offended and for years I never answered the question directly but to fib and to see what the reaction would be. People seem to group or catagorized people. To me that's insulting. They aren't asking me what nationality I am but wanting to know what "race" do I belong to so that I could be categorized in their minds. If I say Black, oh that's not good or wow you're lucky to get that good hair you must be mixed with white, If I say Indian oh I'm a poor thing what reservation do I live on, If I say Hawaiian I'm asked is that really a race or what is that? When I'm home on the islands no one ask me anything I just blend in. Wish everywhere was like home!!
