We were lucky to have this Barred Owl hang around our yard for a few weeks last Feb./March. He would pretend to be snoozing and then swoop down on any Mourning Dove that dared to turn its back on him. He also managed to catch a few shrews that would come out of the snow around the feeders. It was a tough winter for owls...as you can see from the shadow in the second photo, he was actively hunting even at midday. (Bracebridge)
