Thanks Barbara!
The first link was the most helpfull.
After looking at those pics' I've come to realize that some of the sharp shinned I've seen over the years have actually been Coopers!
Now that I know that the sharp shinned are about jay or dove size....there is no way one of them could fly off with a dove grasped in their talons.
We do have a hawk preying on redwings and grackles in our yard right now.
Must be a Coopers if it can handle flying off with a grackle?
Incidently while out walking on a trail along the Vermillion River (near Sudbury) yesterday, I heard a sudden rustling of wings and felt a whoosh of air past my head, from behind!! Nearly gave me a heart attack. Thought I had flushed a grouse as they have the habit of doing that sort of thing.
But it was a sharp shinned and I must have startled it as I came around rocky outcrop where it may have been perched in a small birch or alder. It flew across the river and I could see then what it was, as it turned and flew away.
