Two years ago we watched a Sharp-shinned Hawk strike a Mourning Dove and then struggle with it on the ground for many minutes. Eventually the dove became still and after a couple of tries the hawk managed to lift it and fly off a short distance. You can't just go by size since female sharpies can be almost the same size as male coops. Without getting a good look at the bird's other characteristics, it can be very difficult to tell them apart.
