Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesMorning Birding

Arrived at Carden Alvar this morning for sunrise a 5:30 and did the Wylie and Alvar road loop. Saw all of the grassland specialties including; 2 Loggerhead Shrikes at the reliable Bluebird box #10, Sedge Wren, Alder Flycatcher, and Virginia Rail at Sedge Wren Marsh, Upland Sandpiper, wilson's Snipe, Clay-colored Sparrow, Vesper Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, and Golden-winged Warblers (7 individuals) throughout Windmill Ranch. Heard a Black-billed Cuckoo but could not find it. Thank you John for the directions to find the Sora, checked out the marsh at Prospect Road, couldn't find the Sora but had stunning views of a Least Bittern. I will find a Sora one day, I hope! Mammals included White-tailed Deer, Coyote(just before sunrise on Wylie road), Red Squirrel, Eastern Chipmunk, and Eastern Cottontail. Many beautiful plants are in bloom, Prairie Smoke is my favorite.
