300 years ago, the powerful Realm of Noraecanth stretched from the Veiled Peaks in the east all the way to the Western Sea, claiming dominion over all. The ruling family of Noraecanth at the time was the Verdains’, an old and respected house. It was early in the year when tragedy struck the realm. Old King Harfel had passed on suddenly into the Realms of the Dead, leaving no heir to take up the throne.
The next in line was the young, ambitious Lord Gerard of the House Norain. He and his family had held duchies in the realm for as long as the House Verdain had set a king or queen upon the throne. Seeing his chance to claim the throne for his family in all the confusion, Duke Gerard put himself forward as a legal candidate for the throne. It took the people and High Council by surprise to get such a forthright claim given to them, but his claim was checked and verified. All seemed to be going well for the House Norain.
That was until Foraeth of House Doralt stepped forward with his own claim. Foraeth, the illegitimate son of Coraine of Verdain – the youngest sister of the former king – and Duke Barel of Doralt, knew that he had the better claim; for though he was an illegitimate son, his blood connection to the former king was far closer than Lord Gerard’s was.
What followed was a bitter dispute that raged back and forth through the High Court. Who to place on the throne? Choosing either could result in conflict, and that was something that the High Council would do anything to avoid having happen. But days dragged into weeks, into months, and still no decision was made. The people were getting restless, and factions began to form. One, backing the claim of Lord Gerard; the other that of Foraeth. And still, even with this startling new development, the High Council put off making a final decision yet again.
In the end no decision was ever made. War wracked the land as the two factions stood to face each other down to the death. For years the battles raged on and off, and many lives were lost. It took nearly a decade for the heat to die down between the two groups and finally, at long last, an agreement that both factions could live with was drawn up. Noraecanth would be divided. The western lands that included much of the coastline, the Great Forest, and the Barren Hills would be ruled over by Gerard and was called Norne after his house, while Foraeth would hold the eastern lands from the Veiled Peaks to the vast expanse of Lake Raefale and these were named Vercanth as a tribute to the old ruling line and the old realm. With boundaries drawn up, the two groups dispersed and set up their respective lands as each saw fit. The once great Realm of Noraecanth was no more.
