thanks duder. i just got a cheap copy of a jazz bass, but its working out very well, and sounds great on the amp i got. I got a 1981 Peavey TNT-100 and it sounds really good...very loud, the bass has a lot of low end, 1 tone knob, and 2 volumes. I will definitely look into the pedals and thanks for the suggestions.
