A Reminder to the Pension Board

A reminder to the Pension Board.

1. We (the retirees) have a right, a responsibility, to monitor pension board activities.

2. We have a responsibility to challenge, questionable activities. Obviously a memo involving $210 million dollars should have been questioned, if not by the pension board then rightfully by the effected members. Remember, the challenge by retirees at the board meetings resulted in the declarative action, on the advice of a pension board member.

3. During the first phase of the declarative action, the pension board asked the retirees not to list them by name because it could impact their credit and good standing with bonding, etc. The retirees agreed, complied and changed the declarative action. I’m asking the same thing?

4. The retirees opened the door for discussion and negotiation, during the entire declarative action proceedings. The pension board refused to discuss anything and forced the retirees to take it to the next level.

5. Our Retirees Board acted on behalf of the entire retiree association and all Tampa Fire and Police retirees in general, moving only as directed by the members. The goal of the retirees was to protect potential losses to the fund and assure all members are being treated equally.

6. It is not a customary practice by courts with common sense; to attach monetary responsibility to “random” members of a “corporation” in stead they attach the responsibilities to the corporation itself. As originally indicated by the Pension Board, when they asked to protect their good names.

7. The demand that eleven random individuals pay back the fund on behalf of 1500 retirees is simply unfair. I know, I know our membership is only about 500, but the fact is all retirees, with the exception of the recent few that benefited from the retro-multiplier, would have been very happy if we’d won.

8. Fairness is what we sought from the beginning. Fairness is something we have never received.

a. Devaluing the PRAA $210 million – Legal? But not fair.
b. Providing higher multiplier to a few, but not all – Legal? But not fair.
c. Making 11 people pay restitution for 1500 people – Legal? And not fair.

Justice has not been served, only punishment for asking to be treated fairly. I am not a member of the TF&PRA’s Board and never have been. All I’ve ever done is support the retiree’s in their efforts for justice, along with at least 500 other individuals.

Jerry Wotherspoon – Retiree (just like 1500 others)
