Re(2): hiring coaches
IP: 64.5.147.102

Coach: I would never presume to argue with Coach Klausing (he's forgotten more football than I've ever learned) but... in regards to the "loyalty" issue... Coach Foster's premise is correct. But... how do you know a coach is going to be loyal BEFORE you hire him? As the one coach said in his reply, the guy came with him from a former school and then turned on him! I always checked references but... also talked with the interviewee's building supervisor; teachers in his department and... I always wanted to meet the prospective coach's wife. But, the bottom line is: you can't measure loyalty until some time has passed. If possible, I always brought in a new coach and started him at the bottom of the responsibility chain on the staff. Which meant that I was always training a current coach to be moving up the chain. Unless I knew a guy personally, I would not bring in someone I didn't know previously to take over a key staff position. The guys that I'd "been to war with" in the past were the ones who got the top assistant jobs.
Hope that gives you some food for thought.
In Christ, Lew
