Our first small red finch of the season was at the sunflower seed feeder in Victoria Road this morning. The colour distribution -- orangey on head and back at base of tail, rather than the "dipped in raspberry juice" look -- led me to call it a house finch rather than a purple finch. Hesitating only because last year we had loads of purples and not a single house.
