Political action committees are formed to raise and spend money on political issues.

They often are created to advance a political agenda or further the interests of particular businesses or industries.

The PAC in this week's spotlight is the San Bernardino County Safety Employees Benefit Association.

Why it's newsworthy:

San Bernardino County Safety Employees Benefit Association is a union that represents San Bernardino County deputy sheriffs and district attorney investigators, according to its Web site. This year, the union donated $400,000 to incoming 3rd District Supervisor Neil Derry's election campaign.

Some of the contributions made in 2008:

$4,891.67 to Bill Emmerson for State Assembly 2008

$4,891.67 to Bob Dutton for State Senate 2008

$4,891.66 to Paul Cook for Assembly 2008

$3,600 to Bob Smith for Assembly

$1,000 to Karen Bass for Assembly 2008
