True, surrogacy is an option for the not so fertile couple to have the biological son/daughter of there dreams. However, What is meant to be a ray of hope for the sterile parents, can potentially end in heartbreak for the couple. The surrogate and the intended parents might disagree about certain aspects of the pregnancy and just how it should be managed. There is also the fear that the surrogate might change her mind about giving the infant up after giving birth. There are also instances where the embryo isn't entirely biologically related to the intended parents, in which case the surrogate might fight for custody of the infant, and in some cases win. It is a horror that is sometimes made all too real. There is also the matter of cost. Surrogacy is one of the most expensive options for the infertile parents, and not many couples find that they can afford the costs. Biological parents often pay for all of the expenses during the pregnancy. This includes paying for the innicial IVF, Doctor and Midwife visits, as well as tests and procedures. Not only that, but sometimes intended parents must pay for traveling costs for doctor visits, as well as maternity clothes and food. On top of all of those fees, there is still the fee you might have to pay to the surrogate mother and the agency that the intended parents might go through. In total, a couple could expect to pay anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000, maybe more.
The command was given to man to be fruitful and multiply(Gen. 2:28). God did not condone the practice of surrgacy. In the scripture, the outcome was suffering and disappointment. Scripture also tells that their imagined blessing was more so a curse. Domestocally, there was a lot of tension, heartache, and hatred between the women. In the Bible, surrogacy is emphatically pointing out that man is choosing to be selfish. Surrogacy is a form for man to play God. It doesn't matter whether or not one or both intended parents are infertile, it is wrong to play God, and should accept their fate and embrace it for what it is. To play God is unethical and is frowned upon in most societies, no matter what the 'God' in question is. Not only are the intended parents playing God, but they are taking advantage of the surrogate mother as well. In India, the surrogates are often not compencated or just plain not paid. Not to mention they are treated poorly during the pregnancy.
In certain states, compensated surrogacy is illegal. There are four states in the U.S. that have held that, while such contracts are not illegal, are unenforceable. Most of the surrogacy laws in those states have been concidered unconstitutional in the past. However, with the rising populations in the U.S. alone, these laws should be brought back and followed strictly. With less and less land available for homes, we have barged into wild animals habitats, forcing animals to live among poluted city conditions. With anit-surrogacy laws in action, there will be less births, which leads to less polution, which leads to better air quality, and a lowerd green house effect in the O-Zone layer.
(I must say that I don't really think poorly of surrogacy. This was something that was really hard ofr me to right about for reasons that I wish not to talk about. I think I went off on a weird tangent, but I couldn't really think of anything else to add....*head desk*)
