The moon reflects softly on the water's surface and the ripples that flow show the presence of life. Tall reeds bend majestically, making the picture seem good and serene. Don't let it fool you.

Cadence Of Her Last Breath

The air seemed heavy around the lagoon that day. The stillness was eerie; the silence tortured the ears of its residence till the brink of insanity. Death, worse then death was her opinion of this place she once called home. As though she where a corpse Cadence stood alone in the middle of the Lagoon, like she had done for hours on end. She came her to clear her mind of all the plaguing tedious details, there was no point in talking it over with the others; neither did they dare to swim to the center of the water to ask her. The water around her would be covered in a fragile layer of ice if it wasn’t for her shallow breathing interrupting the waters peace. Cold blue eyes fixed on the waters surface she let her soul drown deep down into the icy depths.

Dipping her nose into the water she stopped breathing as the freezing liquid engulf her air ways. Let it all end, is the easy solution to all her problems, she thought as she closed her eyes and just waited for Rencor. He would take her to a world where these troubles are futile; a place where she could feel no pain or love. The thought was amusing, droplets of water danced into the wind as she snorted into the Lagoon. Love? What is that? Her thoughts mocked. The one stallion she thought she loved had all but forgotten she even existed. Indeed, she had herd his summoning call but she refused to obey. She would no longer be a puppet on his string. She had already been reprimanded once for being late, so in her mind there was no point in even making an appearance.

As memories of the past few months clouded her mind her opinions became stronger, twisting their malicious intentions until they portrayed scenarios in the mares head. Spirit once practically beaten to the point of destruction was now burning with a spiteful desire to let Lupus know what she really thought of him. It was about time someone gave him a reality check. Forcing her head out of the blue depth she carried it high upon her pristine neck once more. Her nostrils stung with cold droplets as she breathed in the stagnant air once more. Acute sense of smell picked up the faint stench of blood drifting on the breeze despite her air waves being water logged. Deciding she should go and investigate what poor unfortunate creature had been injured, she waded her golden body out of Courant’s pond.

Judging by the news that she had over heard on the winds it was most likely going to be Circe or Aviatrix. A malicious smile twisted upon her feminine lips, oh how she wished it so much to be Circe. Petty as it may be, when Cadence took a disliking to someone she could hold a grudge for a reasonably long time. Picking up her hooves to the pace of steady trot, which lacked her characteristic rhythm, it had been a long time since her spirit had aloud her to dance, she briskly made her way towards the mound of buckskin fur which was once a beautiful mare. Cadence picked up her pace, although she didn’t have a strong connection with the poor creature she felt truly sorry for her and wished to help.

Unfortunately Lupus had already got to the beaten mare first. She could clearly see that he was forcing the fragile mare to stand against her will. What an idiot! Couldn’t he see that he was probably doing more harm then good? “Lupus back off!” She shouted in a demanding tone with authority she clearly didn’t have. She abruptly forced her body between him and the bleeding mare. She stood over Aviatrix in a protective stance. Literally standing over her with her back legs hugging the poor creatures left side and her front near the right, Cadence stood tall enough that she would not be crushing the mare bellow her with her barrel. Blue eyes narrowed as she stared into Lupus eyes, “Don’t you think you’ve done enough damaged?”

This was it, the moment she would let it all out. Tell him what had been festering in her mind all this time, “You’re so pathetic.” She started with as she raised her voice so that all around her would hear. “You call yourself an alpha stallion?” She let out a cackle of mocking laughter, “You’re a joke! You weren’t man enough to make the decision yourself so you pitied us against each other for your own sick enjoyment. Promised every one of us that you loved and cherished us.”

All the talking she was doing was probably falling on deaf ears but she continued to stand her ground. She raised her head a little more so she could spit in his face before she continued shouting, a useful way to get rid of the saliva congregating in her mouth. “Bullshit! You don’t give a damn about any of us! Sherridan was stolen due to your carelessness and you let your Alpha,” There was a distinct spiteful tone on that last word, “Almost murder your Beta. Congratulations, you’ve allowed a monster worse then yourself to lead us when your back is turned.”

Bending her head low she affectionately nuzzled Aviatrix to let her know she was there and that everything would be alright. She looked back at Lupus, her features softened with hopelessness, “Remember those days when I protected you while you where sleeping? Shielding you from the ghosts of Poltergeist Woods? I reminisce of those days so much. When you actually made an effort to care for me. But now it’s clear to me that your not even half the stallion I thought you where.”

“For now on Lupus, don’t call for me, I won’t come to you.” She let out a heavy sigh before she would utter the last words she was intending to say to him, “Now leave me be so I can pick up the pieces of this broken herd.” Using her influence over the water she commanded a stream from the lagoon to unnaturally crawl over the bank and wash Aviatrix blood stained body. She fixed her eyes upon the ground and watched the blood drain away, “I’m sorry.” She whispered down to her herd sister, “It should have been me and not you. I know the water is cold but trust me, it will help.” Once she had finished cleaning Aviatrix she laid down next to her on the mare’s right side, which seemed to be less painful, “I’ll look after you until your strong enough to look out for yourself.”
