I agree wholeheartedly that most disused trackbeds are of little use for anything else but reinstatement (except roads and cycleways) because of their shape. However, once owned by private individuals such parcels of land become very difficult to recover for railway use, but they will provide much money for the legal profession. I also agree that the L&B are doing an excellent job with their trackbed reclamation given the length of time the line has been closed but its difficult, even for them and, of course, the L&B is only Narrow Gauge (chunky narrow gauge I'll admit!) I disagree with you regarding land prices, land will always be expensive in the UK and people all over the world will, it seems, happily fight and die over little bits of land if they have to (Gaza is a prime example). On a lighter note, one cartoon I saw in the Mail(yes, THAT newspaper) today was a picture of 2 hedgehogs celebrating whilst reading a headline "Car production down 60%!" Replies:
