Characters can only have powers or familiars if they trade a coin for them.
The first character of each new member is allowed one free coin - all other characters must earn them.

Your first character, Candil, has a coin - if you want to transfer that coin to Jae instead you can, BUT you will only be able to trade it for elemental control of fire OR a familiar. You'd need two coins to get both, unfortunately.
