Hi Marci,

Here is what I wrote on this subject before:

I have never really followed the teachings of Dr.Schulze or Dr.Christopher, In my opinion they are way too old school. We have learned a lot of new things about herbs even within the last couple of decades. Many of the herbs they recommend are not as effective as many of the herbs available these days, nor as safe. For instance they recommend berberine herbs a lot such as goldenseal, barberry and Oregon grape root. These kill the intestinal flora, damage the intestinal lining, and deplete potassium, which can raise blood pressure. Depending on the type of infection there are all sorts of better choices without the side effects. They are also in to the stimulant laxatives (senna, cascara sagrada, cape aloe, rhubarb root). I am against these due to the fact their anthraquinones can cause a laxative dependence. Echinacea is another herb I really don't bother with. It is overhyped and unstable.

I do work with some common herbs such as pau d' arco, chaparral, plantain, nettle, alfalfa, seaweeds, etc. But I also try to keep up to date on studies of herbs that are up and coming. I have been working with herbs such as andrographis, coleus forskohlii, chagas, amla, phyllanthus, rhemannia, bilberry leaf, bamboo, red sage root, and others for many years. If combined properly you can take advantage of their chemistry to potentiate their effects with each other. This way you can get more effect and even reduce the toxicity of some of the more dangerous herbs.

I believe that they are upfront and honest, but they only known what they have been taught or learned beyond their teaching. Just like a doctor only taught in allopathic medicine is not going to know much if anything about natural healing. Herbalists too often get in to the same tunnel vision thinking that old school is the only way because they have been "proven" by historical use. Or they get in to the mindset that only a certain group of herbs from a region will work. Some say only to use local herbs. Other think only Chinese herbs, or Ayurvedic, or South Amercian, or even only Western herbs. The truth is that every place in the world has medicinal herbs, and they can be combined from different regions to get better effects. For instance chaparral from the Southwest or Mexico, with pau d' arco from Brazil and Argentina for a combined effect. Both are strong full range antimicrobials, but combined the sulfur from the chaparral will increase the effectiveness of the pau d' arco by increasing the antiviral beta lapachone content.
