Hi Shirley,
Actually there are over 20 forms of vitamin D. The ones we are most interested in though are vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), vitamin D3 (calcidiol) and active D3 (calcitriol). Vitamin D2 is what we find in plants, and what is added to milk. But it is biologically inactive. So it is converted in to calcidiol in the liver, then in to the active form calcitriol by the kidneys. Therefore it is very important to maintain proper liver and kidney function since improper functioning of either can interfere with conversion of the vitamin D2 in to active D3.
As for the formulas, the Super Ginkgo Green has the level of vitamin D2, and it has herbs that support liver and kidney function.
Fish oils are also good sources of active vitamin D.
And if you cannot get sufficient sunlight then I recommend getting a sun lamp or full spectrum bulbs for your lamps. These also help with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression.
