There's something about the rain that makes him feel better. It didn't matter if he was soaked to the bone and shivering, the sound of drops on leaves just made everything better. It was soothing, even more with the smell of the damp. It made him want to cry, but not from the blues. He just wanted to be a part of the symphony around him. To be part of the world.

He sat with his back to a tree, feet dug into the incline to keep him anchored, jacket pulled over his head to keep the water from dropping down his spine. It was peaceful here. So much rain all around him, conjuring fog after a few hours of the stuff. Within a day the forest was transformed into something entirely different and magical.

Above him, in the tree, he could hear the scratch and quiet chitter, rustle of leaf and bough, of his familiar. Kaldad, who scurried her way through the foliage, never touching the ground.

She couldn't touch ground. Wouldn't.

He didn't understand why. Perhaps the ground, in her mind, represented falling. It baffled him. Even if she were a mere foot above it, she still wouldn't touch it. She'd have him carry her if there were no trees...

She was brave up high, though. In the limbs. She couldn't go far from him, not yet, so he'd sometimes climb up for her. Yes, in the limbs she'd climb and jump with what seemed, to him, a good example of "wild abandon." Sometimes, she seemed to just flow right through the branches themselves.

But one look at the ground had her chattering away, nails clawing up the bark as her eyes, frantic, refused to look anywhere but the sky or wood.

He sighed, leaning his head back against the tree even though the rain then drained easily onto his neck. He'd hoped that getting a familiar would ease the loneliness he felt. Like the rain did. But it seemed to only make it more prominent. Not that he didn't appreciate Kaldad's new friendship. He did. He really did. But it didn't stop the fact that there was something missing in his life.

* Anything else you wish to include: I'd like to use the coin to get a familiar. A reddish-grey squirrel named Kaldad. The phobia would be fear of the ground. And he's bi.
