Cassidy wasn't surprised by his answer, not having expected him to leave despite the fact that she'd told him to. She knew him too well to believe that he would leave the room before this issue was settled. So she didn't repeat her request that he leave, but neither did she turn around to face him. Indeed, when she heard him settle down in his usual chair, she turned her head until she was gazing at the opposite wall to be sure that he wouldn't see her face, not wanting him to read whatever expression she was harboring right now. She was silent again as he spoke, aside from a sniff here and there that she mostly managed to muffle, but which were still clearly hearable in the quiet stillness of the room. At long last though, her voice came back, carrying an edge of bite. "I wasn't picking fights. I was translating. There's a distinct difference." She took a deep breath and ran one hand over her eyes, still refusing to look at him. "I won't have it. I won't have you keeping me from taking care of Raine." Of course, he hadn't tried to prevent her from looking after the child - but he'd tried to keep her from threatening what she perceived as a danger to the child, and in the young woman's mind, that was the same thing.
'She's a worry-wort little critter, but she's as sweet as they come,' Conan confirmed, shaking his head a little in fondness and completely skipping over the fact that Starlit could be quite aggressive, if she thought that you posed a threat to anyone who was important to her. The boy knew that she possessed that other side to her personality, since he'd spent a great deal of time at the farm when the Lady had been alive, but he'd never had it directed at him, and so he saw the hybrid mostly as a cuddly and protective, motherly sort of dog.
(here in a little while, i have to do the trash. i figure it's easier to just do it and get it over with than fight ma over when she gets home)
