The way that Lanny froze caused a stark paused in Raine's cooing - even if she wasn't near old enough to understand the words they were using, much less the heavy topics they were discussing. A moment later, the infant started up with a whine, which made Cassidy flinch, but couldn't make her look up. She didn't meet his eyes, or even try to explain herself or make excuses... she was struck silent. She wanted to say something that would magically make the problem disappear, or take back her words... or lean forward and lay a hand on his arm to try to explain. But she couldn't do any of those things. The only thing she could muster, through the tears that were trying to form again, but were being held back by her willpower alone, was a slow nod, delivered to her fingers where they were laying on top of the sheets. She forced herself not to twist and twine them nervously, but it was a struggle. She wasn't sure what to expect - half of her was fearing that the young man would be raving and angry... and the other half was just as fearful that he wouldn't say anything at all. That he'd leave and...
She closed her eyes and turned her face away. The tone of his voice and the words that he spoke indicated that he'd understood... beyond that, she could do nothing but wait for his reaction, and pray that he wouldn't hate her. To sleep with the enemy was bad enough on a gang level, particularly since she'd produced a Carlyle child from that joining. But she'd already told Lanny that she had loved Raven at one point - a love which he'd betrayed, and which she'd made him pay for by suggesting to Lanny and James that he was dangerous to the gang, and providing them with the information that had finally allowed them to put an end to the Carlyle brothers. She wasn't sure which to fear more - that his temper would come into play... or his denial, which would get him drinking again.
