He had known much in his lifetime, as he should. He had been wandering Beqanna for much longer than most of the horses alive today. That was the gift-curse of immortality. But even so, there was still so much that he did not know, such as the experience of kingdom life. No, Lant had always been just a herd boy, always eager to grab the girl and sate his physical needs. When the Chamber of Evil and the Forsaken Valley existed as separate divisions of the dark horses, he would never have considered service beneath their kings and queens. But things change.

The determination to fulfill his assigned mission resounded with each hoofbeat. His eyes sparked and snapped with a fierce liveliness they had never known before. He had finally decided to see what else existed beyond collecting and reproducing, which had led him to Aranea, the fire-eyed director from the Forsaken Chamber. She was the only person in existence to have ever called him a friend, which had spoken leagues to the old man’s soul (who would have guessed he had one?). So, as per Aranea’s request, he prowled the few remaining herd lands.

After some time, he came to the border of the next land, Mourning Mountains. His eyes swept quickly across the terrain. There was not much promise, which was as he had dreaded to discover. Still, he let loose with a loud trumpet. It was, essentially, a cry of challenge, as he knew would immediately snare attention from whatever stallion lived here, but (for the first time in memory) Assailant poised himself in a picture of passive nobility. It was as he imagined an envoy of any sovereignty would appear, so as not to threaten the integrity of the established dominance.

So he stood, eyes constantly seeking signs of life, daring to hope that his call would be answered.

ASSAILANT.
