new aspect of empires.
IP: 84.64.201.101

Previously, we have differentiated between the following four relationships between territories:

Enmity/exile: the leaders of the two territories are at war and/or are banned from each other's territories.
Neutrality: the leaders of these territories are neither friends nor foes.
Truce: the leaders of these territories have a casual agreement not to attack one another and are considered to be on friendly terms.
Alliance: the leaders of these territories are firm friends and are in a universally recognised agreement not to attack one another and to provide aid to each other, including when the other is attacking another territory.

With the introduction of colonies, territories no longer had to be independent or ruled by independent parties. A colony is effectively an extension of another territory.

Now, there is a new addition: protectorates.

Protectorates can be formed when an alliance is not considered strong enough, and are essentially very similar to colonies. An independent territory leader who is NOT a part of an empire can choose for their territory to become a protectorate of an emperor/empress. The territory leader maintains control of their territory but surrenders all their land points to the emperor/empress and must also abide by any rules laid down by the emperor/empress. In return, the emperor/empress regards the protectorate as it would a colony, and supports and aids it completely. However, the protectorate maintains certain rights which a colony does not have, including the right to keep its leader - the emperor/empress cannot remove a protectorate's leader.

Unlike colonisation, which can be enforced through invasion, territories must be completely willing to become protectorates.

The bond between a protectorate and its protector is infinitely stronger than allied territories, but it comes at the cost of certain freedoms to the protectorate. An empire loses nothing by gaining a protectorate.

Only independent territories (ie, ones who are not a part of an empire) can become protectorates. Only empires (where a territory leader owns more than one territory) can become protectors.
