New Zoning Regulations Actually Becoming Fair!

Recently I posted a missive here about fairness with the new Spafford Zoning Regulations. You'll note I didn't post it anonymously, I did so using my real name. I rather expected some replies, either by way of this forum or by direct phone call. Last evening, I got a phone call from Ken Lieberman, one of our town board members. In one of the most convivial conversations I've ever had with someone in office, he informed me that the hearing on the zoning regulations held last Thursday wasn't just eye candy, but that many, if not most of the comments made at that hearing were going to be incorporated as revisions to the zoning regulations.

As I mentioned in my last post, the proposed regulations that I felt were going too far and stepping on the rights of personal property ownership in this town were laws regarding what, and for what duration, could and could not be parked on one's private property, such as boats, trailers, RV's, tractors, earth-moving equipment and the like. Mr. Lieberman informed me of revisions reflecting many citizens' comments in recent days, and sent me a draft document called "Enhancements to Zoning Regulations" to potentially be incorporated into the final draft Zoning Law. The version we saw at the hearing said unregistered vehicles of this ilk basically weren't going to allowed to be parked on one's property unless one spent serious money building garage space to enclose them from property sight lines. The draft document sent to me now states that one can have (2) functioning pieces of such gear in view, and as many others as you may wish if you enclose them. No mention of "registration" is made in either case.

I feel this is a reasonable compromise from the position of nothing being allowed parked on site to a sensible amount.

I'm a conservative Republican, and am buoyed by this pro-active approach to local government giving veracity to my personal political views of smaller, more-localized government, comprised of legislators who are neighbors who care and, as property owners in the area, also have some serious skin in the game.

I applaud the town boards' efforts to work together with the constituents on drafting regulations as fairly as is possible with real citizenry input being employed as part of the process.
