Eavesdroppers tilted forward to hear the tiny chuckle that rose from the girl's muzzle. Did she just laugh, kind of? He almost couldn't believe it. She even seemed a little surprised herself. He listened to her speak and wondered what he was the winner of. Her attention? Her presence? If she wanted to think of it as a prize then she was more than welcome. He wasn't going to run her off or anything. She seemed like she would be quite fun to talk to once she relaxed a little and by the sounds of her laugh, it seemed like she was starting to lean that way. He didn't know what he had done to get such a reaction but hoped whatever it was that he'd go on doing it. She had a nice honest laugh, not the chalky fakes that some damsels put on to charm boys like him. He never fell for it. Even his former mate and traitor of a mate Dawn gave an honest laugh when she did laugh. He would never let himself believe otherwise.
She showed her weapons in a non aggressive fashion and he continued watching her, waiting to see what she would say or do next. She spoke again, saying she'd stay. A warm smile chiseled its way onto his features, orbits brightening some as he nodded again.
I would be honored. I hope you continue to laugh. I like the sound of it.
He wondered what was going on in that pretty little pate of hers but wasn't about to ask. He wasn't asking for her bad side that easily. There were little wrinkles in her facades that told of a rough life before this one. Who knows what had happened to her to make her so closed to everyone. Kong couldn't even take a guess. He did know that he should understand, having not had one of the best pasts put on him either. Of course there were the little dirty parts in it that he could have changed but chose not to, the life after the betrayal, after his life as he'd known it had crashed down around his ears. After her, well, things got nasty quick. He was an alpha twice in his lifetime and twice he walked away. Once because he'd already lost everything and there was nothing left to fight for. The second time because he'd come to a place where he disgusted himself and didn't think he deserved the place set out for him.
He wanted a second chance and he'd gotten it here. He was an omega, nothing more. No responsibilities, no stress. Paranoia and Angel were more than enough wolf to handle the jobs. He didn't want to go back to that wretched hole he'd been in less than a year ago. He didn't even know who he was back then. What he'd become. Sometimes he had a small urge to return to the abyss, to the darkness, pain, death. Other times he despised even the thought of it and kept his visions clean and clear cut, wanting a new and better life for himself and others. He didn't want to be the monster again. Sometimes.
