so if you see me, in the wind |
Altus was more than a little surprised by her question. It seems, to him, that he'd only just reminded her that he wasn't Elyria. Perhaps, he hoped, she mistook him for having powers beyond that of the wind. He'd prefer that option over the other: that she was daft. Maybe it had been her that hadn't been listening this time. Whichever the case, Altus could feel his patience, worn thin with the memories she brought up of his past in War, begin to fray.
“Arianah,” he said, the calmness to his voice now carrying a faint, detectable edge in its rumble.
“I am not Elyria. My tapestries weave the past. My understanding of fate is sorely lacking.”
As if to accentuate his point, the wind picked up and made the tapestries, with their brilliant, unique patterns, dance. It was not he that weaved them, he was merely the observer to the process. And, lately, he'd found his far-off observation to inspire ennui instead of wonder. He shifted his weight, his gaze wandering back to the rest of Hoof Prince. Lately, the scents of his brethren had been coming from the most unexpected places. Perhaps it was time that he, too, re-entered the world.
Looking at the Valkyrie jungle, with the wind bringing him sweeps of humidity and scent, a cacophony of noise whispering in his ears from far-away in the lulls, he thought of Courant. How long had it been since he saw her? Too long, as far as he was concerned. He missed her. Missed her smile. Missed her touch. Missed the rain that drenched him in her emotion. Missed her breath warming his neck and his own flowing against her skin and back again, breathing in the scent he knew so well, but could never grow tired of.
Selfishly, he willed the winds of the Valkyries to bring her scent to him again, just to enrich his memory.
“So tell me, what news from the North?”
