version five plot prelude; part two.

Lauma paces the entranceway to the Shrine, growling under her breath.

The Omniety is driving her up the wall. She had hardly welcomed the arrival of Aura – who she had renamed ‘the Alpha’, since fairy names mean nothing to her anymore – and she’d rather die than admit the truth: that having the Alpha around is somewhat comforting. At least around the Alpha one gets the impression that she has all the answers, even if she doesn’t share them with her company all the time. Aura may not be physically strong and she may be emotionally unstable after the loss of her familiar and the betrayal of her lovers, but she’s no less wise or knowledgeable than she was before, and Lauma doesn’t doubt that when the time comes to it, she’ll know what to do.

If, that is, the silly little leprechaun man in the green suit will let her be herself for five minutes. For the third time, Omni had brought a man to the Shrine and placed him inside Aura’s body, granting him full use of her divinity but prevent Lauma from being able to communicate with her. The lioness is certain that inexplicable the sense of uneasiness she has is nothing to do with the Omniety itself, and she yearns to discuss the issue with the Alpha. At least Patrick is one of the Conquerors of Darkness, so he has already earned a minimal amount of trust and respect from Mallos’ familiar; for Joel and Freya, Lauma had felt only hatred and repulsion. Even so, she realises that Patrick will be of no use whatsoever, since he has only had divinity for a few hours at this point and his control will not be precise enough to uncover the information she seeks. This is something she’ll have to do herself.

Slumping down on the ground, the great lioness closes her eyes and focuses Mallos’ magic, attempting to use her powers of precognition to see into the future. She doesn’t use magic very often and it takes a little while to coax out, and even when it does it takes her several hours of deep meditation for her to see the truth and understand it. When she opens her eyes again, the sun is beginning to set, and Patrick/Aura is seated at the entrance beside Lollipop watching the sky redden. Lauma pads over to them.

“Come with me,” she growls, and begins leading the way down the cliff face towards the beach.

As they walk, the lioness sends out telepathic messages to Delilah, Lilith, Scott, Rushad Jirka and Jasper – the other Conquerors of Darkness. By the time she and Patrick have made it down the cliff face and crossed the beach the other five are already there waiting for them, huddled together in the darkness.

“Some of you may already have an idea of what I am going to say,” Lauma begins, “it is happening all over Shaman. Fairies with powers of the mind are the most affected – things like clairvoyance, precognition and mediumship – interestingly, fairies with mind powers like telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation are largely unaffected. Some of you may have felt it yourself. The air is heavy with dread and the currents of magic are beginning to twist and turn against us; something is brewing.”

“I don’t understand,” Delilah says softly. “What’s coming? What are we supposed to do?”

“You are the Conquerors of Darkness – you have already indirectly fought Mallos to revive his nemesis. When he returns – and we are certain now that it is a case of when, and not if – you will be among the first he will try to take revenge on. You must arm yourselves for the war that is coming. Protect your families and protect each other.”

“You’re being very vague,” Scott puts in snappishly; “something is coming, a war is coming... couldn’t you be a little more specific? What exactly are we supposed to expect?”

“Everything.” The lioness replies sombrely. Silence falls over the group for a few moments. “Aura will not be able to protect everyone, and if you only try to protect yourselves you will fail. Mallos worked by chipping away at individuals and interpersonally destroying their lives – if you fight him as individuals you will fail. Only if you stand together and face him as one will you stand a chance.”

“Why are you telling us this?” Rushad asks, “you’re his familiar. Don’t you support him?”

“I do not pledge wholeheartedly to one cause or another. I am neither Red nor White, but Green; I fight for whichever side will benefit me in the short term. There is no profit for me in delivering this warning to you, but you have earned my respect, and the worthy title of the Conquerors of Darkness. I prophesise that I was right to group you under one name as I did – your work did not end with gathering the ingredients to revive Aura, it began with it. The time when the Conquerors of Darkness will be needed again is soon. Be ready for it.”

The last sentence is spoken with such finality that most of the group nods and drifts away. As Lauma turns, however, she sees Lilith slinking towards her, obviously wanting to get closer but respecting the lioness’s need for privacy.

“Come, little Night Seer,” Lauma says wearily; “I will carry you home. Climb on my back.”

Lilith mumbles her thanks and climbs up onto the lioness’s back, clinging to the scruff of her neck. Lauma is careful to keep a steady but brisk trot as she makes her way through the woods back towards the Shady Labyrinth so that the little girl won’t fall off. She suspects that there’s something she wants to ask her, and she isn’t disappointed; only ten minutes into the journey, Lilith pipes up.

“I have been having bad dreams.”

“Do share,” the lioness replies with her usual sarcasm; “analysing dreams is my favourite pastime.”

“It’s always the same one. I’m trapped in the darkness, in this kind of tube... I can’t see or hear anything and I can’t move my legs. I can move my arms, but it’s like there’s a barrier around me... and I have strange, horrible thoughts. My mind works differently in the dream – it is clearer, and it sees the world as a mathematical equation. In my dream I can’t exactly see the future, but I can see the different consequences that actions will have and I can predict the likelihood of each consequence actually happening...” Lilith swallows. “Am I... I mean, do you think, in my dream, I could... I could possibly be... possibly be Mallos?”

Lauma is quiet for a few minutes, focusing on the winding path. “You can read Mallos’ mind, can’t you?”

“Yes, but I haven’t been able to do it since he went away, like someone put a block there. This has only started happening recently, and it’s only when I’m asleep. Besides, it’s nothing like when I’ve read Mallos’ mind – this is as if I’m actually inside his mind.”

“Uncontrollable weak possession,” Lauma states with more calmness than the situation deserves. “Weak possession means you can’t control the other person’s body when you’re inside them, and if it’s uncontrollable then it will only happen when your mind is in a semi-conscious or sub-conscious state – like when you’re asleep. If this has started happening recently, then it confirms my theory; somehow, Mallos’ power is growing. While he’s searching for a way out of his prison, his magic and parts of his conscious mind are beginning to leak out back into Shaman.”

“But...” Lilith shivers, “but I don’t have possession! I can’t possess Mallos – I’ve never been able to do that before!”

“No, you’re right – you can’t simply gain a power overnight. My guess is that while Mallos is desperately searching for a way out, he is trying to possess anybody he possibly can, and he’s already connected to you through your mind reading link.”

“But then,” Lilith’s knuckles go white with horror; “but then... does that mean that while I’m sleeping and I’m possessing Mallos, he’s possessing me?”

“Possible. I would say, probable. You need your friends and your family, little Night-Seer, now more than ever. There’s little Mallos can do with an unconscious sleeping body, but if his power is growing he may be able to up weak possession to full possession, and then we’re all in trouble. Love will protect you. That’s the greatest magic of all.”

They’ve reached the border of the Shady Labyrinth. Lauma lowers herself and Lilith slides to the ground.

“Until next time, little Night-Seer.” The lioness smiles and winks. “Take care of yourself, won’t you? Sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite.”

Before Lilith can respond, the giant cat turns and vanishes into the darkness.
