Silenced engulfed her as she waited. Not even the wildlife of the jungle seemed prepared to break the eerie bubble that surrounded her, obviously unsettled by the unnatural movement of the air around it. She hardly moved a muscle as she waited, frozen in her patience like a statue. Now and again an ear would flick, listening intently to some far off noise, before returning to stand sentinel next to its partner. Only her long mane moved, fluttering against the polished mahogany of her neck muscles. Behind her the thick, glossy strands of her tail fanned, wavering under the touch of the breeze like a flag. It seemed to the naked eye that she was very alone, that no one was prepared to address her imposing presence. But she knew otherwise. She knew the jungle like the back of her metaphorical hand, and she had heard the movements of another mare long before she made her presence known. She could feel the disturbance in the air she was so acutely in tune with. She was, after all, Altus’s guardian. The only one ever to receive the fifth level to go with the diamond set into her chest.
The company she received was not the company she had expected. She did not even know this mare’s name, though the smell that clung to her told her she lived within the jungle. There was a little life in these trees still then… just not enough. Not even close. The businesslike mare inwardly frowned upon the intrusion. This was not a meeting meant for novices. But then… at leas this one was showing an interest. At least she was life. And from the sentence that slipped past her lips, she was life that shared a similar view to that of the former queen. And in the coming weeks and months Viri knew the girls were all going to have to pick a side. Better that it was hers. Indeed the waters were stagnant… stagnant to the point of immobility. Marshes and mud pools. It was time for an influx of fresher tides. This was only the beginning.
The dark mare did not turn her attention to the buckskin immediately, her gaze still inspecting the crevices amongst the trees. It was a slow, expectant moment before her proud skull turned, dark eyes peering down the length of her nose to inspect the smaller mare. Her face showed nothing, an invisible porcelain mask forever set over her features, shutting every emotion away from the prying eyes of the world. Viri never looked anything more or less than nonplussed. Her black eyes were large and sombre, and so dark not even a glint of light was allowed to sit on the lenses. Everything was swallowed up into their depths; like two black holes set into her sockets. She was a formidable creature. When her lips parted her voice was strong and deep, notes sticking to a single tone, as emotionless as her face, each word pronounced crisply, not a single letter forgotten.
I know.
Her gaze lingered on the mare a moment, silently scrutinizing the buckskin, though so sterile that it gave away nothing of her conclusion. A small sigh billowed from her nostrils as her head turned, that same dead gaze now fixed on some unseen point through the trees.
This used to be mine. I nurtured it and lead it to greatness. We sat at the head of an Empire; the Southern lands nothing more than an extension to what was ours. It crumbled beneath my army. Now our army consists of two, and one is held prisoner by the Rajputs. These Valkyries… they are not even a shadow of what they once were.
The sombre tones were spoken without sadness or contempt, but merely as a statement of fact, something that was and nothing more. Though the disgust that she felt was something she fought to keep concealed. The air around them notably stirred, causing the leaves above to roar as they were buffeted into one another. The breeze could vent the anger she refused to show. She spoke again, the monotone much the same, though softer, almost as if the words were addressed to herself only.
It will be mine again.
