All great men do wicked things, but people are more willing to forgive them

He exhaled deeply as the drunken ramblings began, eyelids slipping closed over the silver-grey eyes for a moment whilst he tried to keep his temper level. As they flickered open again Arthur fixed his gaze upon the man in the high-backed wooden chair, taking in the blood-shot eyes and unkempt appearance with a certain level of understanding. There were not many people in Shaman who did not know, or at least guess, the reason for Joel’s less than pleasant mood, and on a certain level Arthur was able to relate, remembering that time when Gwen had betrayed him, and the events and drama which had unfurled from there on in, and the time it had taken him to get used to her not being there anymore. Of course it was different, Arthur had never really loved Gwen, at least not in the sense that one would think of between a husband and wife these days. It had been a political match after all, but the king had cared about her, trusted her, and in the end he had been merciful in the end, even when he beloved city had begun to fall with the knowledge in his heart that she had not loved him, and that that, had all been his own fault.

“So it is wrong for me to speak of myself and my disgruntlement, when I was sitting in my rooms minding my own business when I am disturbed by a drunk destroying my property?” Arthur asked, mouth forming a thin, questioning line for an instant before returning to its normal form, “I have no problem with you being here if you are respectful, even if you do not like me Joel, surely you have the decency to do that?” The young King could feel his temper simmering just beneath the surface, but for now he was able to contain it, keeping his voice calm and steady, wise eyes shielding themselves from outward interpretation. Lifting the sword from the table, Arthur moved it and placed it into one of the empty holders which adorned the walls, checking it was secure before turning back around to Joel, just as the man’s irritation was released in a wave of accusations.

Arthur found his patience stretching very close to breaking point, he had been struggling to keep his temper in check since he had heard the loud bangs and crashes from his upstairs room and found that it took a great deal of thought to keep up his pretence of tolerance and understanding. He had spent over forty years as a King, a proper King, not like he was in Shaman. One who had the respect of those around him, and such indulgences were inevitably going to have an effect upon a person’s personality, the most major of which in Arthur’s case was that he hated people raising their voices to him, or blaming him, especially when he did not believe himself to be in the wrong. He also did not do so well in controlling his temper when things began to go wrong, when, in Shaman, he did not have the power needed to put them right, especially when it involved people he cared about.

When he responds, Arthur’s voice has increased in volume, a hint of a tone which one can usually assign to those gifted or practiced in public speaking to possess. “Do not suggest that I am incapable of choosing my own advisors Joel, I’ve had the experience, and I know that you are more than up to the job, and yet the fact I gave you a job explains why you are in the castle, it still does not explain why you are making one hell of a mess in my main hall which is the issue I have right now!” Joel slams his hand down against the table, sending vibrations through the wood towards where Arthur had placed his own hands, so that the two were almost glowering at each other across the table. “Of all the people in the world who have responsibility, very few ask for it, but the greater amongst them do their best with what they are given, I expected you to do the same!” The threat in Joel’s final sentence did not go undetected by the young monarch, “I am not a man you want to threaten, Joel, I can promise you that, I was never a great one for walking away from things, even when I was older than you.”
