Jasper has always found Arthur to be a little strange. Not weird, wrong, stupid, but different, distant. As if he isn’t completely in this world. As if there is something else there, some other life that he is trying to compare himself to. Jasper doesn’t understand how someone could be tied to the past like that; how they could be anchored so tightly to moments gone that they can’t fully concentrate on the now, on the present, where there is flooding and pain and death.

The emotional torment that runs havoc through the Core brings Jasper pleasure. Each shiver of anguish gives the blue-haired boy a tingle of pleasure – there is an inner sadist in the twelve year old boy that grips tightly to his heart. Perhaps it is Mallos’ genetic influence, or perhaps simply a by-product of the conflict that surrounded him growing up. He has lived with Draco’s memories flitting through his mind – when he was younger, Jasper could barely control his telepathy, and on several occasions he gained unwelcome insights into his father’s mind. Now, however, Jasper restrains himself from invading Arthur’s mind.

When Arthur collides into him, Jasper’s train of thought is broken. His golden eyes flicker dangerously, but when they come to focus on the familiar face of an old friend, a soft smile settles upon the boy’s face. “Arthur,” he says warmly, flicking his hair in a mimic of his father. “I’m glad, too. It was close, though,” he says, with a wicked grin on his face. He shifts his weight, scratching his arm but always watching Arthur, feeling his emotions and seeing just how much the King is being affected by the curses that ravage the land and the fairies who live in it.

“It’ll be okay,” he says confidently, though honestly he has no idea. He isn’t too bothered – all he cares about is Iodine. As long as she is safe, Jasper is happy. The boy runs a hand through his hair, and for half a moment he looks just like Draco – he has the same facial shape, the same carefree yet tortured expression – but then it is gone and the madness returns. He blinks and his gaze flicks briefly towards his sister, playing alone. Her shoulders are tense and he can feel her sadness; it runs wildly throughout her body. She misses Flo – Jasper wishes that he could find the grey kitten.
He wishes that he could take Ellie home and make everything better for her.
