As she swims, deep below the surface of the water, air is filtered from the water she sucks in, sustaining her lungs. The feeling is rather uncomfortable, to be honest, because she’s not used to it. She doesn’t swim often, and the bright blue fin spanning out behind her is the main reason for it. She discovered the tail the first time she’d entered the water, when her feet had legs suddenly merged together. It was an unpleasant experience because she’d been standing… and when your body suddenly, uncontrollably merges into mermaid form, it’s rather impossible to stand. She still has a scar from where she’d landed on a rather sharp rock imbedded in the sand.

She squirms mentally at the memory, but presses on, her mermaid tail making it easy to cut through the deep water. It is rather advantageous of her to have that, plus the power of water manipulation and the ability to breathe underwater, especially with this flood, and she likes it this way. All of her abilities made it easier for her to survive the initial rush of water—she’d surrounded herself in a protective water-bubble and stayed there until the rush of water had ended. But now, Shaman is flooded. Fun times.

She’s heading to the Core now, which she knows to be the central point of Shaman (hello, the Core). If the Core is flooded as well, then it’s pretty much the end of Shaman. The flood would devour the island mercilessly and leave nothing behind in its wake. It’s just as simple as that. But she notices that the water level is slowly declining… which means that yes, there is land ahead, somewhere. Suppressing an underwater grin, she swims with a renewed vigor.

Eventually the water grows too shallow to swim, but she pulls herself along awkwardly until the water is behind her. She breathes a sigh of relief as she looks up towards the looming castle above her. She’s made it! Exhaustion overwhelming her, she flops down on the ground once more, breathing in the wonderful scent of damp earth. Damp, yes, but dry enough for her to be satisfied. It’s been much too long—almost a full day—since she started swimming. Let’s just say her sense of direction fails and she’d gotten lost a few times. But… she’s here now, and she’s going to survive.

Her and all of her mermaidness.
