and yet it's cold as ice

Levi had been trapped in that castle far too long, trapped in himself. For so long he had been in fear and loss and panic over Xerxes' absence, and now... Now he could FEEL Xerxes, but his companion was trapped so far away that Levi was constantly in pain from the distance. Still, he had to be useful, because it was just the way he was. He was currently flying out over the swirling ocean, looking for anything and everything that he could bring back to the Core. Floating wood could be dried and used for fires, which they needed to curb the draftiness of the castle.

It was during one of these flights that he noticed someone clinging to the rocks. How could someone STILL be out here? He could see their grip slipping, and his reaction was instantaneous, immediately diving just as Squire slipped under. His wings folded just above the surface, dropping him harmlessly into the water. It was a dangerous move with the currents, the waves, and the unforeseeable rocks, but he needed to try. He took in a deep breath, made shorter by the cold of the water, and dove under, swimming deep with his wings folded tightly to himself. The icy water stung his eyes, but he kept swimming deeper, reaching out ahead of him. When he felt the soft flesh of a wrist he took hold and pulled the unconscious body to his chest, kicking desperately for the surface. When the water broke over his face to the harsh cold air, he took in a deep lungful of breath, a harsh gasp. Pulling Squire back over the the rocks he hoisted them both as best he could before spreading his wings and pushing, struggling, to take flight. It was hell of a lot of work, carrying both their sodden weights, but Levi pushed on. Why?

Because that's just what Levi does...

He damn near crashed onto the balcony, Squire's body tumbling from his arms as he heaved for breath, but scrambled to push himself up, calling for a healer and pulling himself over to Squire, rolling the man onto his back and listening to his chest for a heartbeat, breathing, anything. When nothing came he immediately began CPR, ignoring the half-frozen numbness in his wings, which hung tiredly and limply against his back.

He urged Squire to breath, muttering to him and calling for this stranger to come back. They had lost far too many already, and although Squire was a stranger, Levi just couldn't bear to just sit by and watch another person die.

When life rushed suddenly back into Squire's lungs, Levi leaned back, giving him the space to turn and sputter water onto the stone floor. He smiled in relief, the exhaustion suddenly reflecting in his eyes, as he leaned back against the stone banister. His medium length silver-white hair clung soaking wet to his angled cheek bones, his skin pale despite the amount of time he had previously spent in the sun. His eyes, when they chose to open again, looking down at Squire, were as bold and blue as the sky that was still hidden by clouds, or perhaps even lighter than that, crystal and clear like shallow off-shore waters in some tropical paradise. His dragon-like wings shifted weakly as he shifted forward.

"You're alright now... You're safe..." he assured him breathlessly, sharing that same hollow smile that he always had, but he really was sweet, and caring... he just lacked the happiness to express in the gesture. "My name... is Levi..." he murmured, turning his head to cough hoarsely. The cold air had burned his throat and lungs, leaving them sore and raspy, his body shuddering as he imagined blood running down the back of his throat. Imagined, mind you. He shifted closer and picked Squire up into his arms again, staggering to a stand. "Let's get you inside, near a fire. You must be freezing..." he said kindly, however scratchy his voice was. He carried him down into a common area and set him down onto his own bedding, which comprised of his one coat, as a blanket, and his fur bedding, which had been the only belonging he had thought to save. Other than that he ate less than the bare minimum of rations, drank the bare minimum of water that he needed, and gave up more to the surrounding children, and mothers. He kept only what he needed and little more.

The coat was long, and made of a durable treated hide, like a duster, and the blanket was still soft and warm. It kept him insulated, which he needed to manage with the little food and water he ate. He had less energy, but he did his best to work just as hard as the others. He laid Squire atop the duster and fur, leaving him open to the fire's heat.

He reached out to brush a hand reassuringly over Squire's hair.

"Don't stress yourself.... just relax... focus on getting better..." he murmued, looking down into his face.

He left very briefly to retrieve his share of the rations for the evening, as well as some warm water heated by the fire, and brought them over to Squire, kneeling beside him. He urged him to drink some of the water, and then set the food down for him. In Levi's mind, he could go without the ration for a day, even though he probably shouldn't, even though it was probably unhealthy for him to do so... But he would... Because that's just Levi...
