Draw Muhammad Cartoonist Apologizes for Offending Muslims

(BBC News) — A cartoonist whose work inspired an internet campaign inviting people to draw images of the Prophet Muhammad has apologised for her role in the row.

Writing on her blog, Molly Norris said her satirical cartoon was “hijacked” and that the campaign was “offensive to Muslims”.

Other people set up a page on the social networking site Facebook backing an Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.

It sparked outrage in Pakistan, where a court ordered Facebook to be blocked.

On Thursday the video-sharing website YouTube was also blocked in Pakistan. Reports say more protests against the Facebook campaign are planned for Friday.

After Blocking Facebook and YouTube, Pakistan Bans Twitter for “Sacrilegious Content”…

“There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.” — Ayatollah Khomeini

Islamabad, Pakistan (AHN) - The Pakistan government seems to be on a spree to ban websites in an attempt to crack down on blasphemous content circulating on the Internet. Two days after blocking popular social networking site Facebook and a day after doing the same to YouTube, the government restricted access to another networking site, Twitter, on Friday.

Users within Pakistan were unable to access their accounts after internet service providers were directed to block access to Twitter.

“Sacrilegious contents” is the only reason being given by the authorities for its actions. So far, over 450 URLs have been blocked in Pakistan.

Facebook was banned after the website carried a page hosting a “Everybody Draw Mohammad” Day on Wednesday. YouTube faced the same fate after the Pakistan government charged the site carried some “sacrilegious content.”

Al-Qimmah Response to Draw Muhammad Day

I Will Not Draw Muhammad

— May 21, 2010 — I don't care about offending radical extremists... but the modernization of Islam is not going to come about through our efforts--it's going to come about through the efforts of moderate Muslims. And "Draw Muhammad" day is just going to (a) upset them and (b) make it harder for them to be a moderating influence in Islam.
