Perhaps there was something which was hurting the man. He didn’t look confident like the people who knew where they lived and had lived there for ages, like some of the other children’s moms, he looked like he didn’t know where he would sleep tonight. And hungry. The man was clearly hungry. But grownups didn’t need to get hungry they just ate; they were the ones with food. They knew about that kind of stuff – the whole world was made for grownups, not for little people like him. Everything was built on their scale, everything was made for them, all the systems benefitted them, which was why children needed them to look after them. Except, Al’s mommy wasn’t very good at all that. Like this man. Who was rubbing his head. Alistar wasn’t exactly sure what he was on about, but he looked like mommy did when she was having a headache, and that wasn’t good. Or maybe someone was using magic on him – that could be it. What’s wrong? But then finally the man seemed to compose himself, so Al shushed up and allowed his blue eyes just to stay looking at the man’s hazel ones, which were sweeping off into the distance. I’m Alistar Delillo. Life? You’re alive. The trees are alive. I’m alive. Maybe the reason you’re looking for life is because you don’t realise you have it right here. He put one hand to his own thin chest and half smiled, eyes perplexed. Do you want to come with me? I don’t really know where I’m going, though. I don’t live anywhere. Or you could go to my father’s land – I’ve never been there. It’s called Apeliotes Island, that’s where I’m supposed to go. Mommy always said that I should go there when I was bigger. most people are 90% metaphor |
