Somalia parliament elects new speaker

MOGADISHU — Somalia's parliament on Friday elected Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan as its speaker following a crisis within the country's transitional institutions that led his predecessor to resign.
Adan, who already held the position between 2004 and 2007, was elected by 217 lawmakers out of 388 present during the parliamentary session in the capital Mogadishu.

"I want MPs to be united so that we can overcome the current political situation," he said in his acceptance speech. "We must forget past differences and work towards a better future for Somalia."

Adan, who was ousted as parliament speaker in 2007 over his opposition to the Ethiopian military intervention welcomed by then president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, also said he would seek to rally international support.

A bitter dispute within Somalia's fragile transitional federal institutions flared earlier this month when then speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur blamed Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke for the country's woes.

Parliamentarians, angered by the speaker's comments, passed a vote of no confidence against him and appointed a temporary replacement.
During a week of political confusion, Nur offered his resignation and President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed vowed to reshuffle the government before recognising such a move was unconstitutional and reversing his decision.

Al-Ittihad al-Islamiyya and Political Islam in Somalia

Lara Loewenstein

Abstract: This paper analyzes the factors that aided and hampered the growth and popularity of political Islam in Somalia by tracing the history of al-Ittihad al-Islamiyya. After examining the emergence of political Islam in Somalia and the creation of al-Ittihad al-Islamiyya, this paper traces the growth of the group, its association with the Sharia courts in Mogadishu, and finally its subsequent downfall. There are many factors that allowed al-Ittihad al-Islamiyya to become a significant political force in Somalia. These include Somalia’s status as a collapsed state and outside intervention in the country.

Texas Receives Terror Alert From Somali Goverment

May 28, 2010

Hussein Moulid - AHN News Africa Correspondent

Houston, Texas, United States (AHN) - Somali government officials have asked authorities in Houston to watch for a member of a Somali terror group who may be coming to Texas through the border with Mexico.

The government said Thursday that suspected members of the al-Shabbab terror group, which has linked to al-Qaeda, may be heading to the U.S.

Texas federal court accuses a Somali man in Texas of running a “large-scale smuggling enterprise” responsible for bringing hundreds of Somalis, many with terrorist ties, from Brazil through South America and finally across the Mexican border.

The latest alert was issued after federal prosecutors in San Antonio added new charges against a 24-year-old Somali, Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane. Dhakane pleaded not guilty May 14 in federal court to three counts of immigration fraud.

Many of the illegal immigrants, who court records say were given fake IDs, are believed to have ties to other Somalian terror organizations that have merged with active organizations such as Al Shabbab and Hizbul Islam.

The Department of Homeland Security asked local police to be careful and to arrest a Somali terrorist named Mohamed Ali who is believed to be in Mexico and attempting to cross the border into the United States.

Al Shabbab has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Somalia and have declared allegiance to al Qaeda.

Somalia has 1.4 million internally displaced people, and about 575,000 have fled to neighboring countries. In 2009 Somalis were the third largest group seeking asylum in industrialized countries, with more than 22,000 claims, after Iraq and Pakistan.

WIFE BEATING 101: The Rules according to Shari’a Law

In Islam, it is OK to beat your wife, just not in front of the children. And you must not break any bones or cause bleeding. A Muslim cleric in France wrote a book about how to beat one’s wife and how to do it without non-Muslim authorities finding out. Muslim men also are known to beat servants not only in the Arab world but in the United States, too.

At Least 80 Killed In Pakistan Mosque Attacks

Attacks on the Ahmadi Muslims are a constant in Pakistan, considered heretical because they do not recognize Muhammad as the last prophet. And because they eschew violent jihad.

Suspected Islamist militants attacked two mosques packed with hundreds of worshippers from a minority sect in eastern Pakistan on Friday, holding hostages and battling police, officials and witnesses said. Some 80 people died, and dozens were wounded in what’s believed to be the worst attack ever against the Ahmadi sect.

Exiled Islamist Bakri: Islam is Against Soccer World Cup

May 28th, 2010

Football: yet another thing that Islam disapproves of..

Terror-supporting Muslim cleric and fellow Islamo-loon Anjem Choudary’s ‘boss’, Lebanon-exiled Omar Bakri Mohammed, pronounces that Islam is ‘against’ the upcoming Soccer World Cup:

A HATE preacher is urging British Muslims to snub England’s bid for World Cup glory.

Bearded fanatic Omar Bakri Mohammed said the contest was evil because it “inflamed nationalism”.

And he sparked outrage by ordering Muslims to ditch the St George Cross. He even condemned Muslims who support England as “deviant and hypocrites”.

Bakri, 52, was speaking from Lebanon after being deported from Britain for inciting racial hatred.

It is feared his comments could trigger unrest when England play on June 18 against Algeria, the only Muslim state competing.

He said: “Islam is against the World Cup because it inflames nationalism. That is why we get so much hooliganism with supporters of different countries fighting each other.

“I am sure there will be some Muslims supporting England, but they are deviant and hypocrites. “We have nothing against playing football for fun.

“But when it involves matches between countries it provokes feelings of animosity. Algeria will not be representing Islam, so Muslims should not support them either.”

He was backed by British-born extremist Anjem Choudary, 42, who has called on Muslims who fly the St George flag on their cars to rip them down.

But their comments were blasted by Football Supporters’ Federation chairman Malcolm Clarke.

He said: “The main message of the World Cup is of hope and friendship and not politics. It’s not about negativity and hatred.”

Just one more thing that Islam is ‘against’, then – all the less reason for his followers to live in Britain, the cradle of world football. Just why are they still here?
