Father's Ramadan presentation at Louisville's Coal Creek Elementary prompts dispute

Muslim says principal's reaction showed bias; school cites separation of church and state

By Vanessa Miller, 05/28/2010

Seyitriza Tigrek, whose son is a third-grader at Louisville s Coal Creek Elementary, distributed these fliers after the principal interrupted his classroom presentation on Ramadan. The father of a third-grader at Louisville's Coal Creek Elementary wants the school district to punish the school's principal for interrupting a presentation he was giving to his son's class about the Islamic religion.

Seyitriza Tigrek distributed fliers after school this week to Coal Creek parents asking for feedback on the principal and the Boulder Valley School District's response "regarding his mistakes."

Tigrek's complaints stem from a September incident when he asked his son's teacher if he could make a presentation about Islam to the class. His third-grader, Muhammed, is Muslim and was feeling uncomfortable about fasting during Ramadan because his classmates didn't understand his religion, according to Tigrek.

"The goal of the presentation was not to proselytize, or win converts, but just to help the students understand that there was no need to treat Muhammed differently because of his fasting and his name," Tigrek's attorney, Philip Bienvenu, wrote in a letter to Superintendent Chris King and school board members.

Muslim Women: Say Goodbye to Jeans

As of Thursday authorities in a devoutly religious sector of Indonesia’s Aceh providence have disseminated 20,000 long skirts to Muslim women for inappropriate attire. Shops in the district that sell or display tight clothing can have their license revoked. The new rules apply to the Aceh providence’s Muslim population said Ramil Mansu, head of West Aceh district. Mansu explained to the Associated Press that the skirts are given to women wearing clothing that fails to meet the restrictive dress code. These measures are all part of a two month campaign to enforce the regulation and promote strict moral values. As described by Mansur, inappropriate clothing is determined by the Islamic police. If the dress code is violated the risqué clothing is confiscated and a long skirt is given in return.

On Thursday during a police raid, 18 women wearing jeans received long skirts and only after speaking with Islamic preachers were the women released from police custody.
Imma, a 40-year-old housewife argued, “I am not wearing sexy outfits, but they caught me like a terrorist only because of my jeans.”

Texas: Somali indicted for smuggling Muslim terrorists into U.S.

May 29, 2010

A federal grand jury in San Antonio indicted Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane on Wednesday on two counts of making false statements to federal authorities.

Dhakane, 24, has been in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since entering the U.S. through Brownsville in March 2008 and saying he wanted to seek asylum. He applied for asylum while in custody in October 2008.

The multiagency Joint Terrorism Task Force alleges he failed to disclose on his application that from before Sept. 11, 2001, through January 2003, he had been a member of the wire-transfer network Al-Barakat and an Islamic militant group in Somalia, Al-Ittihad Al-Islami (AIAI), both on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of Specially Designated Terrorist entities.

The indictment, made public Friday, also alleges he’s known by 10 aliases, mischaracterized how he came into the United States and left out key details about his life in Brazil. It also alleges he failed to say he was part of and later ran a large-scale human-smuggling ring that smuggled, or tried to smuggle, hundreds of people from Brazil into the United States, among them “several AIAI-affiliated Somalis.”

RUSSIAN ANTI PIRACY OFF SOMALIA, Navy releases accused Somali pirates held on warship for six weeks

Navy releases accused Somali pirates held on warship for six weeks

By Craig Whitlock, Washington Post, May 28, 2010

The Navy on Friday released 10 accused Somali pirates who had spent more than six weeks in custody aboard a U.S. warship in the Indian Ocean, Navy officials said.

U.S. officials said they tried to find a country willing to prosecute the alleged pirates, who were captured April 5 in the Arabian Sea by the McFaul, a U.S. guided missile destroyer. The McFaul apprehended the pirates after they had hijacked an Indian cargo ship and taken nine crew members hostage, Navy officials said.

The prisoners were removed from the McFaul on Friday and were being transported back to Somalia, Navy officials said.

Americans for Peace and Tolerance Issues Video Criticizing Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s Embrace of Islamic Radicals

YouTube video shows Governor Patrick embracing the radical leadership of the Muslim American Society (MAS), including an Imam who told followers they must “pick up the gun and the sword” in the context of the arrests of local Islamic extremist Aafia Siddiqui and terror suspect Tarek Mehanna.

Boston, MA, May 27, 2010 -- The Muslim Brotherhood is the source of most of Jihad ideology and related terror throughout the world today. Yet Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is embracing the MAS: a Muslim organization that Federal prosecutors have called “the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Today, Americans for Peace and Tolerance (APT), an organization of Christians, Jews and Islamic reformers, released a 7 minute video showing the close relationship of the Governor to these radicals.
Dr. Charles Jacobs, APT president, said the video highlights Governor Patrick’s visit last Saturday to the Muslim American Society’s (MAS) controversial Saudi-funded Roxbury mega-mosque and cultural center.
Jacobs said, “The Governor’s embrace of Imam Faarooq is especially egregious, given that the Imam recently urged congregants to “pick up the sword and the gun” in the context of supporting recently arrested local Muslims on terror-related charges.

Governor Patrick please consider the concerns of all the citizens of the Commonwealth and:

1. Stop embracing radicals
2. Give back the questionable money
3. Reach out to truly moderate Muslims
4. Don't let political correctness compromise our security

Islamic Republic of Sudan Swears in War Criminal as Leader...

Sudan president Omar al-Bashir sworn in amid outcry

• Sudanese president begins new five-year term despite protests
• Inauguration boycotted by several African and Arab leaders

Xan Rice in Kampala guardian.co.uk, Thursday 27 May 2010

Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, the only world leader facing an international arrest warrant, was today sworn in for another term in a low-key ceremony boycotted by many African and Arab leaders.

Bashir won more than two-thirds of the vote in the April presidential poll, which was marred by opposition boycotts and reports of rigging and intimidation. The victory in effect ensured he would avoid being taken in the foreseeable future to the International Criminal Court, which indicted him in 2009 for alleged war crimes committed in Darfur.

Since then, Bashir's foreign travel has been severely curtailed because of fear of arrest by nations that recognise the ICC. But ceremony in Khartoum highlighted the extent of his diplomatic isolation.

In attendance were the presidents of Chad, Eritrea, Djibouti, Central African Republic, Malawi and Mauritania – all lightweights on the African stage. No top Arab leaders were present. While the UN was represented by the heads of its two peacekeeping missions in Sudan, the British and American ambassadors were absent, reportedly abroad.

Human rights groups had urged countries to boycott the inauguration to demonstrate their commitment to international justice. This week the ICC reported Sudan to the UN security council for failing to hand over two people indicted for war crimes in Darfur, the state minister for humanitarian affairs, Ahmed Harun, and a government-allied militia leader known as Ali Kushayb.
