Adonis tilted his head, then nodded and sighed. The truth was that many parents were too afraid to look after their children. Lisette had not been strong enough, physically, mentally, or emotionally to care for her triplets, so Adonis had raised them as his own. They knew that he was not their father. He had told them. But he had raised them, from birth quite literally, which made him more of a parent than anyone biological could be. He leaned back and listened to Charlotte as she described women to him, and he nodded gently, agreeing.
" “And some are more and more beautiful, like roses, but have thorns on the outside to keep anyone from touching them.” His eyes met hers, glowing golden. " “What are you, Charlotte? Should I put my heart on guard from you?” It was not a question meant to create any unsettled feelings. He just needed to know, with every fibre of his being, whether letting her know him, letting her close, was going to hurt him again, like every other woman who he had loved.
Aura was different. Aura was the mother of his unborn child. He had feelings for her that ran much deeper than those he felt for Siobhan now. He needed to protect her, to protect her from anything that may come for her, even if, gods forbid, Mallos himself came for her. How was he supposed to raise a child, no, not a child, his child on his own? At least if it was someone else’s child then he could blame the parents for anything being wrong with it. He sighed softly.

For a moment he could have sworn he drifted off to sleep, just for a few seconds. " “When I came to Shaman I was a boy, nothing more. But I have taken many lives. I am telling you this because you need to know what sort of man I am. If you choose to leave, I will not hold it against you.” He tilted his head. " “The humans came in the dead of night, when I was on my first lone hunting trip. They killed everyone, family, friends. They left nobody alive, took anything worth taking, and burnt the rest of my village to the ground.” Itzal lifted his head and let out a small whine. " “So I went to them. I hunted them down like animals and set their buildings alight. I do not think that anyone was left when I went from there and kept running. I never stopped. Until I came here. Nobody knew me, nobody judged me. But I cannot hide this from anyone who wants to know me…”
He did not look at her. To make it easier for her to leave if she wanted. He would not hold it against her. Anyone in their right mind would not want to sit next to, or even care for someone who admitted to killing an entire settlement of humans… As a mere boy.
