Three Red Moons
IP: 99.70.66.100

The walls close in on me and I can’t breathe;
Reality is too much. It suffocates me and I
Need to escape. I run to my world of make-believe:
The realm of the three red moons in the purple sky.

“Get your head out of the clouds,” they say,
“Stop daydreaming, you look like a loon!”
I try to ignore them but I know at the end of the day
I have to tear down the purple sky and its three red moons.

I rip the lantern off of the bulb, and let the bricks fall
Because I’m sick of being crazy, of them calling me loon.
But then I realized that I’ve let them take it all,
They’ve taken my purple sky and my three red moons.

Suddenly, I’m standing beneath the naked, blinding light.
I want to run, but I’ve lost my sanctuary, my only ally.
I’ve torn off the paper lantern, but now the light is too bright.
Why did I let them take the three red moons in the purple sky?

I look desperately for the pieces of my shattered sanctuary,
My shredded paper lantern, my smashed cocoon
Because the light is too bright, and reality too scary.
I miss my purple sky and its three red moons.

I glue together the shredded lantern and rebuild
My broken haven, my perfect lie.
Their words no longer matter. They almost killed
The three red moons in the purple sky.

My lantern is back, and I once again cover the blinding light.
I don’t need their idea of truth, which tries so hard to deny
Anything beyond their limited, narrow sight.
They can’t see the three red moons or the purple sky.

They think reality is limited to what they can touch and see;
That’s what all normal people believe. So, I’m a loon.
But I’m fine with being abnormal, because now I can be free
In the realm of the purple sky and the three red moons.

And for five minutes a day, I don’t see pictures of the dead
In the news, or of falling bombs and hungry children who cry
Every night. I see only this beautiful place I’ve built in my head
With its three red moons and its purple sky.
