Sam began to gather speed, legs taking the change between canter and gallop with ease. It was so nice to just be able to run – to spread his legs and forget everything. The ground thudded away under his hooves but he might as well have been on clouds for all that he noticed it. Sam was quite in another world – one where mares said what they meant and hooves obeyed the legs above them. It was wonderful. So delightful and uplifting that he failed to remember to check on Azami. He couldn’t hear thundering hooves beside him now. Sam slowed to a stop.
Glancing round he sees her in the distance: he has left her quite behind. Feeling guilty [such a prominent emotion for Sam; there is always something to feel worried or accountable for.] he makes his way back, all the exhilaration gone from his step. He smiles anxiously at her, his first step in apologising. “I’m sorry. It was just – uh – fun, y’know?” It had been fun but now it had stopped dead on its feet. The corpse lolled in front of Flotsam, its hollow eyes silently reproaching him for his thoughtlessness. It said: you fool, you silly damn fool you. Why leave her so alone?
