The most effective appetite stimulants are digestive bitters. When they contact the tongue the stimulate the bitter receptors on the tongue. This in turn stimulates the vagus nerve increasing the levels of stomach acid, bile and pancreatic enzymes. They also flush the liver so it is important that they drink plenty of water throughout the day when using bitters to prevent flu-like symptoms from the cleansing.
There are different bitters on the market such as Grape Bitters, Swedish Bitters, Chinese Bitters, etc. In this case though I recommend Ginger Bitters since many of the patients may be experiencing nausea as well. Ginger suppresses the vomit centers in the brain more effectively than Dramamine. Health food stores sell bitters, but you may have to look online to find ginger bitters specifically.
