would you mind if I burried my soul?

He had his suspicions that even when he died this time around, it would not be forever, and never would his eternal sleep truly be eternal, it was not his fate. His death was like the slumbering wolf, taking short snaps of rest when he was able to, but on full alert for when he was needed. Shaman had never been part of the plan, he was sure about that, these were not his islands, not his people, not really, he was here due to a magical accident and yet this life had changed him. Arthur had never been egotistical, he had worked too hard for his crown and fought too many battles to be overly proud, he had understood the delicate balance between life and death, between having everything and having nothing at all, but in Shaman he had needed to work to gain the respect he had had in his old life, it was a different kind of culture with different expectations and he had needed to adapt accordingly. The young King often thought how much he would like to have Merlin with him once more, but then he was not entirely sure that the wizard was not already in his life. Arthur knew that Pendragon was part of his soul, but there was something about his familiar, the mannerisms, the tones of voice and even the look in his eyes which was so very Merlin. Arthur had come to the conclusion long ago that the bird was a reflection of everything that the old wizard had taught him in Camelot, everything which had stuck with him and marked his soul forever.

Lilith’s cheeks were blotched, but he chose to make no comment, she had obviously not wanted him to see her crying or she would not have bothered to rid her face of tears. Arthur did however hold her to his chest tightly, tighter than he might have done if she had come to him grinning, knowing that she, unlike Gwen, found comfort in body contact. “I didn’t go far, I’ve been in the stables all day, Santu’s foal is growing up nicely, you will have to come and see him sometime.” He pauses as she steadies her breathing, before taking a step away from him and looking up, the brightness back in her eyes. “you try mucking out twelve stables, and then we’ll see how good you smell shall we?” he grinned back, “I thought I’d come see you before I grabbed a bath, unless of course you want to share it with me?” He raised his eyebrows at that, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, waiting for her reaction.

He had known that Lil’s younger sister was pregnant, he did not find the idea of a girl so young being with child as shocking as some others might have done, girls after all had been married off far younger in his day, but he knew that Lilith worried about Minn and so Arthur did too. “She’ll be fine, she’ll learn, sometimes we learn best when we have no choice. I saw boys turned out onto battle fields who became great soldiers simply because they had to fight in order to survive, people often surprise you Lil.” Arthur reached out with his hand and tucked a strand on the cat-girl’s hair behind her ear.

He heard it, detected the slip, grey eyes darting to her green ones questioningly, but glanced away a fraction of a second later, prepare to let it go. In this life he had not had a father, and Uther had perished when he had only been an infant, he could understand on some level, and Uther, after all, had not been the most gracious of rulers. “The problem with people like Mallos Lil,” Arthur said with a sigh, “is that they tend to have aces up their sleeves, the largest army is never necessarily the strongest, but we will fight, I have never turned from a battle and I don’t plan on starting now, do you?”
