The air is heavy as you make your way through unknown territory, as you pause to sniff the air a drop of rain falls onto your nose. It is soon followed by another and another and soon the rain is pelting down in sheets, soaking you to the bone. The clouds are an angry purple and the menacing drumming of thunder rolls over the sky. Squinting your eyes against the blinding water you find yourself at the edge of a large, dark pine forest. You are too desperate for shelter to notice the scents that mark the border and plunge in, and nearly into the chilly stream that runs through the territory. You veer away and as you are shaking the water out of your fur you notice a large pair of icy blue shards gazing at you. The storm has passed now and beams of sunlight filter through the thick canopy of pines, illuminating a massive male wolf not three feet away from where you stand.

His pelt looks like a bad patchwork job of black and white and beneath them you see large, hard bands of steely muscle and you know this is a warrior for his torso is marred with many battle scars. His banner curls over his back and his lips are drawn, exposing sharp ivory daggers. When he speaks his voice is deep and dominant, like the thunder you so recently heard.

"Wolf, you have found yourself in the terra of the Andere Seite Pack. I am Eclipse, king of this land."

It is only then that you notice another pair of lanterns gleaming in the penumbra and a dark-pelted fae slinks out into the clearing to stand next to the king, her own banner waves and her green and blue eyes bore into you. She is the same size as most males and a crisscrossing pattern of scars show that she too can take care of herself. Her voice is cold and has a snake-like sound to it yet you can see they are both fair rulers.

"And I am Nephthys, queen of Andere. We don’t care much for strangers so you must make your choice, Submit to us now or flee our lands and never return. If you fail to do either you will have little time left to regret it."

The formidable pair pierces you with their gaze and you feel as if all your secrets spill out before them. You are left with a decision now. Will you submit and take refuge in this dark forest or will you flee and never know what secrets these trees hide? Make haste, you can see that the pair grow tired of waiting.

The ebony brute licked his wounds as he waited anxiously by the entrance, after a few minutes he and Plague held a quiet discussion in whispers and then the king went and dragged away the intruder’s corpse so the undergrowth of the border would soon claim it. He would be gone a short while he said, to check the border and then he would return or send another trusted wolf in his place. Plague was a good king and Baroq knew the pups were very well protected within pack terra. Baroq paced anxiously until Jena appeared at the mouth of the den some time later, with two little scrappy balls of lifeless flesh. Baroq whimpered and stopped her from going any further, sniffing at them and then stepping out of her way. She told him Jewel was asking for him and it was all he could do to not dig another tunnel to get to her. His large frame squeezed down the tunnel, but its small opening meant safety and warmth for his family so he simply gave a light shake when he entered the birthing chamber and whined quietly. His queen was before him with two pups suckling on her. He gasped and his eyes glazed thickly with a loving gaze.

I’m so proud of you. They are…amazing.

He heard Jena return and she didn’t enter and he smiled as her thoughtfulness and proceeded to lie down so his large frame surrounded the flanks of the suckling or sleeping pups. One was a bulky boy and the other was a girl who he thought had her mothers face. He nuzzled Jewel and licked her, grooming her face and neck gently, a smile plastered permanently on his face. Looking at his pups, he sniffed, them, licked them, inspecting their health and stature, these two were the strongest of what should have been a litter of four. It was sad that the intruder had most likely caused the death of two, but the happiness seemed to overwhelm him and he instinctually began to lick and sniff Jewel too, making sure she was well. Her skin didn’t move under his tongue like it used to and he licked her once and then stood.

I’ll be right back. Jena’s still her for you.

She probably wondered what in the hell her new daddy-mate was doing but he had an idea and rushed past Jena with a smile and a wink to say everything was okay. He thundered off into the woods, feeling the air caress it as he ran and suddenly the picture of Jewel and his pups seemed to make him understand more in the world. It made him understand his brother and he now felt a new sadness for his brother’s loss. He cleared the creek bed and lay down in a shallow pool of ice cold clear water and stayed there a few minutes, turning over and once he was drenched he walked carefully back to the den, his coat dripping with water. He again past Jena without a word and lay down next to Jewel and licked her reassuringly. Although a lot of the water had dripped off and dried out, there was still plenty for Jewel to lick off, much like wolves drinking the dew off the grass in the morning by running their muzzle along it. As he mate groomed his fur to quench her thirst he smiled at her and licked her head and occasionally sniffed at his pups. His pups, not anyone elses.

The new father simply couldn’t describe how he felt.

The ebony king, Plague, had dragged the corpse away form the borders, out into no mans land for flying lera to feast on. It was the least he deserved and not it not been crucial and had there not been ladies present, he might have made his death just a little bit slower. He trotted back to the den site after checking all was well and found Jena guarding the entrance and the smell of newborns wafting out. He could smell four separate scents, with some difficulty. He smiled at Jena and nodded respectfully in the way of the den and then spoke up in a quiet voice as he stayed standing away from the den.

It seems you have everything under control, Jena. I shall go and attend to the border, but there should never be help too far away for you to call.

Plague smiled and waited to see if she had anything to say, then nodded decisively and turned tail and trotted into the woods. The tall tree’s of Andere kept the woods in near constant shade, with random little sunbeams coming through every now and then, the birth of new pups to ranked wolves was a great delight to him and he guessed he would see them soon. Perhaps once they were beginning to venture out of the den. He could wait, for now he had to go find Kimani and perhaps become and new father also. She had never told him if she had gotten rid of the pup/s or not. In fact, he hadn’t seen her in weeks, but that wasn’t unusual for her. He wasn’t worried, he was simply curious as to what the hell she had been doing besides border patrol.
