Greatest Medal of All
I wish someone would tell my little story.
Tho’ it may not be filled with high hope and glory.
I trained, practiced hard like everyone else.
and wrestled my matches till nothing was left.
Although I never won a medal at State.
My medal is so much more greater than great.
Before you just shrug. like you do not care,
I’ll tell you my story. Let me take you there.
I went to my doctor. A checkup. Routine.
But he ran some tests and discovered something.
Blood cells, Red ones. White ones. Platelets.
He spoke to me as if he had some regret.
I’d noticed I was getting tired of late.
I figured it was from my cutting weight.
But then, when I thought to put on a pound,
Just like that, I would drop back down.
To win a medal was a welcome strife.
Suddenly, I was in the fight of my life.
My parents did their best to be strong.
I only knew that I had to go on.
The hospital had me when sickness came.
I treated that just like a part of the game.
I kept my hopes up. I kept on my smile.
Said, “It’s injury time’ It’s just taking a while.”
All the times I laid down on my back.
I could not wait to be back on the mat.
The chemo treatments were my biggest foes.
Can’t tell you how much they weakened me so.
They must have worked because one month in.
I was back on the mat, wrestling again.
Still, however, I wasn’t the same.
Something about me, inside me, had changed.
More tests. More treatments. More doctors. Not fun.
The worst was when Doc said, “Wrestling is done.”
But one thing that good doctor just couldn’t see.
The spirit that I know that lives in me.
State tournament time, once again I was back.
And I went out my way, right there on the mat.
Didn’t make it up to any medal rounds.
But had the most glorious thing to be found.
For state medals, my name never was called.
But my life is my greatest medal of all.
Cancer was the biggest match I was in.
And cancer, cancer, cancer did not win.
