I think Annie Jo told me once (and she's pretty thorough when it comes to PJ research), Byron passed away the same day the last ep of PJ aired. Rufe filled in here and there the last season, although his participation was minimal because of health concerns. Not unlike Howard McNair (the other "Floyd") on Andy Griffith. And yes, Rufe did pass away in '74.
