Before even Lanny had finished speaking, the old man's face was blanking out - he wasn't happy with the restrictions being placed upon his activities, particularly as they were interfering with his attempt to protect Cass in Raine, in the department that he was best at. But before he could come up with harsh words and start and argument, Cass squared her shoulders and caught his eye with a stern gaze of her own. "You may not be afraid of Lanny or the doctors," she murmured, lowering her voice appropriately to avoid being overheard, "But you are afraid of me. And I say that you are going to do as they say. It's not up for discussion." Well, 'afraid' wasn't quite the word of course; Johann had no physical harm to fear from his niece, and knew she would do nothing to hurt him on an emotional level either... but on the other hand, she knew him closest of anyone, and was quite familiar with the few things that he was afraid of. Not that she ever enjoyed putting them to use, but if it was necessary to get him to rest up like the doctors said he needed to do, she would use them, and he knew it. His eyes met hers in challenge for several long moments, but they finally fell away in subtle submission to her demands, and from there, he turned them to Raine, where she was quietly pulling on her father's fingers. Ordinarily, she would be cooing - but she'd always proved sensitive to tension in the air, and with Johann and Cass facing off, it had definitely been tense. There was a short silence, and then, "You see there, Lan - that's what you'll have to deal with when that girl o' yers gets bigger. Soon's she learns to talk, she be just as good at tha' game as 'er Ma. You'll see." It was a grumpy comment - but one Cass recognized as a statement of grudging intent to obey.
Well, a hush fell over the pool room

(that's the song i always think of in relation to johann, in the role of Slim, lol
in happy news, the guppy/molly tank is finally clearing up. i took out about half of the water because it was so brown and full of ammonia, but i didn't want to take too much because i didn't want to disrupt the biological filter, so it was still pretty cloudy - but now it's clearing and looking much better, and all the remaining fish seem to be healthy)
