Training of Trainers on Designing and Delivering Effective Human Rights Training

Hargeisa - Protection of Human Rights is one of the reasons of Nagaad’s existence. The Umbrella campaigns for any activity or program that is intended to ensure safeguarding of human rights of both genders. Therefore to get this Nagaad has conducted a TOT training for its member organizations and other participants from government institutions on how to design and deliver effective human rights trainings.
The workshop was held in Nagaad’s compound in Hargeisa on 3th - 8th March, 2010. Officials from Nagaad described that this training is aimed to increase participants’ understanding of human rights principles, standards and mechanisms; strengthening their training facilitation skills; and providing an opportunity to examine ways of advancing the partnership between government institutions and civil society organizations in the promotion of human rights in Somaliland.
Building the participants capacity in the area of human rights is essential in order to integrate human rights with human development effectively. Equally important is their capacity to effectively train others in human rights work programmes.
The training was based on a participatory model, which involved brainstorming, experience sharing, group work and open discussions.
During the course of the training, participants acquired understanding of human rights and gender equality in Somaliland, as defined in international human rights instruments, thus contributing towards a social environment beneficial to poverty alleviation and justice for all.
The participants were also given knowledge and skills about universal human rights framework including the principles, standards and mechanisms, and its relevance within Somaliland’s development context.
Participants also learned tools and techniques enabling them to transfer the acquired knowledge at grassroots and sharing of experience on how best to promote rights and development at the country level through examining the role of both government institutions and non state actors.
Finally TOT members discussed strategies and future plans for the collaboration between government institutions and non-state actors in meeting their obligations to promote and protect human rights.
