"Yeah... and ramming my car can be construed as an accident," the young woman retorted, her tones sharp, even though the tartness wasn't really directed at Lanny - it was her frustration and stress coming out in the only way that she would permit it. "Gunning me down in front of a hospital, not so much - and it's not likely to succeed either, with the emergency room three feet away. No, our perp here is clever... they've gone to the trouble to dig up my private life, tapped into our mail and phone lines, hired lawyers, and went to the trouble to make what happened to Johann look like an accident. My bet is, they're not concerned with quickness and ease so much as they are effectiveness; they're going to bide their time and cover their tracks thoroughly, not run me down in the street." She shook her head and paced a little away from them, though the small room didn't provide much space for that activity. And after a few moments of silence, the old man spoke up. "Hate to admit it, girl... but that really isn't too far a jump of logic. It makes sense."
"Yeah, well... I know a little something about men." That was a bitter mutter, and after another couple of seconds, Cass composed herself, and turned back around to seat herself next to Lanny, leaning forward to tuck the blanket in around Raine. She was silent for several long seconds before she went on, "I'm no good to them dead - otherwise they'd have sent Kessler to the door with a gun and he'd have killed me on the spot, and taken Raine then and there. What remains to be seen is why... what does me being alive gain them that killing me could not?" She spoke in a detached and cold tone, as if her life were no more significant to herself than a piece of lint on her sleeve - something dispensable and worthy of consideration only because it would help solve the puzzle of what risk was posed to her daughter.
(oh no prob - shame on your step-dad, majorly! it not the kitties' fault! if they were human babies, he wouldn't take them out and kill them!)
