The Academy Performs Community Theater To Promote Community Awareness of Civic Rights and Responsibilities

(Laas-geel, Somaliland- 23 Oct, 2010) As part of its Civic Education and Mass Media Campaign, the Academy for Peace and Development implemented a community theater initiative in Laas-geel, district, which is 70 km east of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland on Oct 18, 2010.

The drama was performed by a 13-member group by the name of Weedhsan Group based in Burao, the capital of Togdheer region. The drama was a part of series of performances the Civic Education and Mass Media Project carried out in the districts of Borama, Berbera, Burao, Hargeisa, Odwayne and Sheikh.

Hours before the play was started, an announcement car informed the local people about the play, resulting in the turnout of more than two hundred spectators, mostly women and children.

The number of spectators increased as the group leader introduced to the spectators about the content and the characters in the drama one at a time.

"The drama is about the citizen's rights to the basic service from their respective local government and the responsibilities the citizen have, in turn, to their local governments" announces by the group leader, a thin and middle-aged man whose eloquence and comedic character highly attracted the viewers.

The drama group leader introduces the content and the characters of the community theatre. Two of the actors in the drama performing a segment on citizen's rights.

Some of the spectators burst into laughter in a highly interactive segment of the drama.

The message of the play was very clear and entertaining, explicitly conveying the messages of rights and responsibilities of citizens. The drama had a question-answer rhythm in which the leading actor would pose a question to the other actors who chanted out their answers in unison.

For example, with the microphone on his right hand, he would say "What makes a good citizen" Using sarcasm to help the audience to internalize the messages of the play, the other actors would promptly list a number of characteristics to the audience some of which drew lots of laughter and applause.

The play had also a number of songs that related to the subject matter of the play. Among the songs played were: "Hey citizen! Open your eyes!" which carried the message of being vigilant and conscious about the security threats which the country faces.

At the conclusion of the drama, the spectators asked the Academy to return with a repeat performance; a strong indication of the kind of impact the initiative has had on target communities.
